HEAL-SL Fellowship 2023
Funded by HEAL-SL — Healthy Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation and Njala University
Njala University, School of Community Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) and the Healthy Sierra Leone (HEAL-SL) project offers 4 scholarship positions for international students who aspire to do their MPH or collaborate with Njala researchers on a short-term research.
Objective of the scholarship programme
To fund international MPH students (from other countries as well as Sierra Leone (SL)) to obtain an MPH with a focus on health and mortality measurement. In addition it will enable visits to SL by researchers from outside of SL on health measurement in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC).
Scope of the scholarship programme
For candidates who are accepted into the MPH scholarship programme, funds will be provided by the scholarship to cover tuition, travel (1200 USD round-trip max) and cost of living for the official duration of the study. For researchers/students applying for shorter visits (non-degree), the scholarship programme would provide funds for travel (1200 USD round-trip max) and per diems for cost of living expenses to – mostly but not exclusively - Masters (such as MPH) and PhD students from outside SL to collaborate with SL researchers on projects related to health measurement. The short-term grant may also incorporate local candidates with priority given to international researchers as the goal is experience sharing.
To short term researchers in addition to international travel and accommodation in SL funds may also be available for (some) expenses essential for their activities in SL, such as local transport costs, publication cost, and laboratory disposables. These will normally be provided by HEAL-SL (or other relevant stakeholders ). Visits should typically be of a duration 3 months max. Work should be related to health and mortality measurement, but this can be interpreted broadly and may include laboratory projects, software development, mathematical modelling and computer simulation etc. Preference will be given to projects related to verbal autopsy methods. This may include learning the methods currently in use in HEAL-SL, but may also involve research into evaluation of VA methods or triangulating its findings with data from other sources. The short-term visits programme is not intended to lead to degrees from Njala University. However, academics from Njala University may act as co-supervisers of theses and degrees awarded by universities outside of SL. Publications in international open access journals will be encouraged and stimulated.
Application Processes
All applicants should submit their letter of motivation (MPH), curriculum vitae, academic certificates and transcripts, and a plan (proposal) of anticipated activities and objectives they want to achieve (short-term). If possible and applicable, these plans should identify SL collaborators and seek their endorsement for these proposals. Admission to the MPH scholarship programme will be competitive and it will be according to the University’s admission criteria.
